Shri Jatindra Nath Swain, I.A.S., Secretary (Fisheries), Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying visited the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar, Odisha today.
The Secretary visited the various Units - Tilapia, Genetically Improved Rohu, Prawn, Air Breathing Fish, Ornamental Fish and Hydroponics, etc. Shri Swain stressed on developing the innovative and efficient technology options for the farming community.
During his interaction with the Institute’s Scientists, he urged the researchers to focus on the farm input cost reduction, market creation for fish and fishery products and development of responsive extension systems to disseminate the developed technologies to the farmers and other end users. He stressed on transformative changes that are required to be in place for realizing the goals and the key roles researchers could play in it.
Earlier, delivering the welcome addresses, Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR and Dr. Saroj Kumar Swain, Director, ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar apprised the Secretary about the facilities, hatcheries, aquarium, feed mill and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, etc.
Dr. Jena gave an overview of the present status of freshwater aquaculture and challenges being encountered by the sector.
Dr. Swain underlined the various on-going research activities at the Institute.
The Senior Officials of the Institute were also present during the occasion.
