Skill development training at Gyalshing Fisheries concludes

ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata Centre, organized a 3-day skill development training programme on modern methods of freshwater aquaculture for 20 fish farmers of Gyalshing, West Sikkim, from 29th September – 1st October 2024 at District Fisheries Office, Gyalshing, West Sikkim.

Shri Duchen Lepcha, Deputy Director, briefed the farmers about the present status and future scenario of aquaculture in Sikkim.

Shri Lahang Limboo, Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Govt of Sikkim, also graced the occasion.

During the valedictory programme, Shri Lobsang Tamang, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Govt of Sikkim, addressed the farmers about scientific carp farming and urged the farmers to implement the knowledge learnt from the training in their ponds.

Dr C. N. Ravishankar, Director & Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai, and Dr T. K. Ghoshal, Principal Scientist & Head, ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre, were also present during the programme.

During the technical sessions, farmers were informed about carp culture and breeding, the significance of feed and feeding management in aquaculture, and the essentials of pond management and maintaining various water and soil quality parameters. This knowledge aims to help them achieve greater profits through scientific fish culture practices. Practical demonstrations using CIFE aquaculture test kits were conducted in farm ponds and tanks to measure water quality parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ammonia. Additional crucial topics discussed included fish disease management, integrated fish farming, and initiatives like GAIS and PMMSY, all designed to maximise benefits and enhance farm families' livelihoods, and nutritional, economic, and social security.

At the end of the training programme, training certificates, manuals, CIFE pH kits, and carp seeds were distributed among the farmers.
