ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, organised a 2-day Training-cum-Demonstration on ‘Scientific Pig Farming’ under the Tribal Sub Plan of AICRP on Pig from 21-22 February 2024.
Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, highlighted the potential and different aspects of scientific pig farming that can be profitable to farmers by adopting low-cost rearing practices. He emphasized the importance of farmers adhering to routine vaccinations and effective shelter management to prevent disease incidence and mortality on their farms.
Dr. Shirish D. Narnaware, Section in-charge, Animal and Fisheries Science, briefed the participants about the organised commercial piggery farming, demand for pork, and marketing avenues in the north-eastern hilly region.
Scientists from the institute delivered lectures on pig breeds, breeding practices, newborn piglet management, housing, feeding, reproductive care, stress management, health care, disease prevention, integrated farming with pig components, and pork processing and marketing. Practical demonstrations on deworming, vaccination, feed preparation, storage, castration, semen collection, processing, and artificial insemination were held, with interactive sessions for scientists and farmer trainees. Piglets were distributed to tribe beneficiaries.
A total of 27 participants attended the training programme.
