Technology Commercialization at ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi Reaches New Milestones

Technology commercialization is one of the most important and impactful achievements of ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, reflecting the Institute’s success in translating agricultural research into technologies that reach industry, farmers and the market.

Through technology transfer and licensing of advanced varieties/hybrids and processing & post-harvest innovations and enhancing smart vegetable production strategies, ICAR-IIVR is bridging the gap between scientific outcomes & its practical applications with market linkages and industry–institution partnering.

The surge in commercialization of ICAR-IIVR technologies and products is facilitated through the special internal channels including Agri-Business Incubation (ABI) cell and Zonal Technology Management Units, often backed by national bodies like Agrinnovate India Limited. These efforts align directly with national priorities to enhance crop resilience, elevate food security, and maximize rural entrepreneurship across the agricultural sector.

During FY 2026–27, till date, ICAR-IIVR has maintained the strong momentum of technology commercialization with 51 licenses, including three through (AgIn), generating licensing revenue. These licenses involve 43 technology instances, covering improved vegetable varieties, hybrids and other technologies, and have been transferred to 22 companies.

One the occasion of IIVR’s Foundation Day on 28 September, seven varieties were licensed to three companies. This continued performance demonstrates the growing demand for ICAR-IIVR technologies and the Institute’s sustained focus on converting research outputs into commercially viable agricultural solutions.

The commercialization achievements of ICAR-IIVR also received significant national visibility during the ICAR Foundation Day celebration on 16 July, when the Institute commercialized its technologies in the presence of Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The event highlighted the Institute’s commitment to strengthening the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, wherein ICAR-IIVR’s scientific innovations are transferred to private-sector partners for commercial production, wider dissemination and market delivery.

This collaborative approach enables the Institute to leverage the technical, manufacturing and distribution capabilities of industry while ensuring that research-based technologies reach farmers at scale.

During FY 2025–26, ICAR-IIVR achieved 66 technology licenses, including one through (AgIn), generating licensing revenue through twenty-three companies. A total of 44 technologies were licensed during the year, marking a significant milestone in the Institute’s commercialization journey.

The sustained licensing activity across successive financial years reflects the Institute’s growing commercialization ecosystem and its continued commitment to ensuring that research innovations are translated into tangible agricultural and economic impact.
