From Unemployment to Enterprise: Shengzii SHG’s Mushroom Cultivation Success Story

In the remote hills of Kiphire, Nagaland, where livelihood opportunities can be limited and income uncertainty is a persistent challenge, the members of Shengzii Self Help Group (SHG) were looking for a sustainable way to support their families and build a more secure future. With determination but limited resources and employment opportunities, the group was searching for an enterprise that could turn their collective effort into a dependable source of income.

Their search found a promising answer in an unlikely but highly suitable enterprise—oyster mushroom cultivation.

With the intervention of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kiphire, the SHG embarked on a journey that gradually transformed a small livelihood initiative into a growing rural enterprise. Through hands-on training, locally adaptable technologies and continued technical guidance, the members learned to cultivate oyster mushrooms using low-cost methods suited to their local conditions.

Turning Knowledge into Opportunity

For Shengzii SHG, the journey began with learning the basics. Recognising the group’s limited financial resources, KVK Kiphire introduced them to the construction of low-cost mushroom cultivation units using locally available materials. Practical demonstrations helped the members understand unit design, layout and the importance of maintaining basic hygiene and suitable growing conditions.

The training went beyond theory. Members received hands-on exposure to the complete mushroom production cycle—from substrate preparation and sterilisation to spawning, bagging and harvesting. This practical approach helped them gain not only technical skills but also the confidence to manage the enterprise independently.

To help them take the first step, KVK Kiphire also provided essential inputs, including mushroom spawn and polythene bags, along with technical guidance throughout the production process.

A First Harvest that Changed Their Outlook

The results came sooner than expected.

Within a month, the group harvested its first batch of oyster mushrooms, producing 70 kg of fresh mushrooms. The produce was marketed locally and generated an income of ₹17,500.

For Shengzii SHG, the first harvest was much more than a financial return. It was proof that a small, locally suitable enterprise could create a real livelihood opportunity. The successful sale of their produce boosted the members’ confidence, encouraged them to continue, and gave them the motivation to think beyond a pilot activity.

The quality and freshness of the mushrooms also received encouraging responses from local consumers, helping the group build an initial market for its produce.

From a Small Beginning to a Growing Enterprise

Buoyed by the success of the first harvest, Shengzii SHG gradually expanded its mushroom cultivation unit with continued support from KVK Kiphire. The group added more mushroom beds, strengthened its cultivation practices and increased its production capacity.

What began as a modest experiment has now evolved into a sustainable income-generating activity. The SHG currently earns more than ₹1 lakh annually from mushroom cultivation, demonstrating how a small-scale intervention, when supported with appropriate technology and continuous handholding, can develop into a viable rural micro-enterprise.

The group is now looking beyond its existing production. Plans are underway to increase cultivation to meet growing demand in local and neighbouring markets. The members are also exploring value addition, including dried mushrooms for off-season marketing, along with better packaging, branding and stronger market linkages.

Creating a Local Mushroom Ecosystem

One of the most important enablers of this transformation has been the availability of mushroom spawn closer to the growers.

Earlier, accessing quality mushroom spawn was a major challenge for mushroom growers in Kiphire. The spawn had to be procured from Dimapur, nearly 300 km away, making the process costly, time-consuming and logistically difficult. Long-distance transportation also increased the risk of spoilage and transit-related losses, creating additional uncertainty for small SHGs seeking to expand production.

This challenge is now being addressed with the establishment of oyster mushroom spawn production at KVK Kiphire. The facility is catering to the spawn requirements of SHGs and mushroom growers within the district, bringing a critical production input closer to the farming community.

Local availability of quality spawn is helping reduce transportation costs, minimise transit-related losses and ensure more timely access to planting material. More importantly, it is contributing to the development of a stronger and more reliable local ecosystem for mushroom-based enterprises in Kiphire.

Empowerment Beyond Income

For the members of Shengzii SHG, the impact of mushroom cultivation extends beyond earnings. The enterprise has given them an opportunity to acquire new skills, make independent economic decisions and envision a future with greater self-reliance.

As one of the members recalled:

“We were struggling to make ends meet and had no idea about such an important self-employment opportunity that could bring such great results. Within just a month of training, we earned ₹17,500 and proved to ourselves that we can stand on our own feet. Now, we are not only planning to expand our business, but we also feel confident, independent, and hopeful about the future. We are forever grateful to ICAR-KVK Kiphire for guiding us every step of the way and showing us the path to self-reliance.”

The group’s experience illustrates how the right combination of technology, training, timely inputs and sustained institutional support can unlock livelihood opportunities even in remote and resource-constrained communities.

A Model for Rural Self-Reliance

The journey of Shengzii SHG—from unemployment and uncertainty to a growing mushroom enterprise earning more than ₹1 lakh annually—offers a compelling example of grassroots livelihood transformation.

The success has been built on a simple but powerful foundation: a locally suitable technology, practical skill development, access to essential inputs and continued technical support. By bringing mushroom cultivation and spawn production closer to rural communities, KVK Kiphire is helping strengthen local production systems while reducing dependence on distant sources.

As Shengzii SHG looks towards higher production, value addition and wider markets, its journey stands as an inspiring example of how collective initiative and scientific knowledge can turn a modest beginning into a sustainable enterprise.

From their first 70-kg harvest to an annual income exceeding ₹1 lakh, Shengzii SHG’s story is not merely about mushroom cultivation. It is a story of confidence, self-reliance and the transformative power of opportunity—showing how a small livelihood intervention can take root, grow and create a pathway towards a more secure and empowered rural future.
