ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone-II, Jodhpur, in collaboration with ICAR–National Research Institute for Integrated Pest Management, New Delhi, organized a day-long online training-cum-orientation programme on the National Pest Surveillance System for Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under ATARI Zone-II today.
In his introductory remarks, Dr J. P. Mishra, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Zone-II, Jodhpur, highlighted that the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), developed by ICAR-NRIIPM in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DA&FW), Government of India, is a significant digital initiative aimed at strengthening pest surveillance, providing early warning systems, and delivering timely, location-specific pest management advisories to farmers.
He emphasized that the extensive network and grassroots outreach of KVKs make them ideal institutions for promoting awareness, adoption, and effective utilization of the NPSS among farmers, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and other stakeholders. He further stressed the importance of equipping KVK scientists with adequate orientation and hands-on exposure to the functionalities and field-level applications of the NPSS platform.
The programme was organized in four sessions. The first session comprised the welcome address and introductory remarks, followed by expert presentations. The second session, Technical Session I on 'Overview of the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS)', focused on the genesis of the NPSS, its collaborative framework, the integration of information technology tools, and the features, functionalities, and user interface of the NPSS portal and mobile application.
The third session, Technical Session II, featured a live online demonstration of the NPSS mobile application, showcasing its features, functionalities, user interface, and practical field applications. The participants were also familiarized with the key functionalities and features of the NPSS portal.
The fourth and concluding session was devoted to feedback and valediction. Participants actively interacted with the resource experts, raising queries and seeking clarifications on various aspects of the NPSS, which were addressed through detailed discussions.
During the valedictory session, participants were encouraged to actively promote the NPSS and facilitate farmer onboarding through regular training programmes, demonstrations, field days, farmer–scientist interactions, and other extension activities. Special emphasis was laid on assisting farmers with the installation, registration, and effective use of the NPSS mobile application to strengthen real-time pest surveillance and ensure timely delivery of advisories at the grassroots level.
The programme was attended by 66 Subject Matter Specialists, mostly from plant protection disciplines, from KVKs of Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi states.
