Fishing remains a vital source of livelihood in the Sundarbans region of West Bengal. Under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan, the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata Centre, organized a specialized training programme at Canning-I to enhance the skills and income opportunities of traditional fish farmers.

The training focused on key aspects of modern aquaculture, including catfish culture practices, integrated fish farming, value addition, and preparation of farm-made fish feed. The sessions were complemented by hands-on practical exercises to ensure effective learning and adoption.

Conducted from 18 to 20 February 2026, the programme benefited 100 participants from the Sundarbans region, comprising 60 women and 40 men. The initiative aimed to strengthen technical capacity among fish farmers and promote sustainable livelihood development through improved aquaculture practices.
