ICAR–Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, commemorated World Earth Day today, by organizing an outreach program among ornamental nurserymen in and around Majari Budruk village of Haveli tehsil, Pune district. The initiative was conducted under the Intensive Campaign on Balanced Use of Fertilizers, aimed at promoting sustainable practices in nursery management.
A team of scientists actively participated in the program. The team visited ornamental nurseries in the region and interacted directly with nursery growers to understand their current practices and challenges.

During the visit, the scientists emphasized the critical importance of the balanced use of fertilizers in the nursery industry. They highlighted how excessive or imbalanced fertilizer application can degrade soil health, reduce plant quality, and increase production costs over time.
The team also created awareness about the benefits of biological fertilizers (biofertilizers) as eco-friendly alternatives that support sustainable production.

Special focus was given to their role in enhancing soil fertility, maintaining soil biodiversity, and improving overall soil health. Growers were encouraged to adopt integrated nutrient management practices that combine chemical and biological inputs in a balanced manner.
The program concluded with an interactive session where nurserymen shared their experiences and clarified their queries regarding fertilizer management.
