ICAR-CCARI, Goa Promotes Household Nutritional Security through Kitchen Gardens

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, organized a one-day training programme on ‘Kitchen Garden for Household Nutritional Security’ today in Goa. The programme was conducted with the objective of promoting household kitchen gardens to enhance nutritional security, encourage self-sufficiency in the production of fresh vegetables, and improve the dietary diversity of the households.

The experts provided training on the planning and establishment of kitchen gardens. The training covered the selection of suitable vegetable and fruit crops for different seasons, layout and design of kitchen gardens, seed and planting material selection, nursery raising, nutrient and water management, organic production practices, integrated pest and disease management, crop rotation, and round the year vegetable production.

Participants were also sensitized to the nutritional benefits of regular consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and the role of kitchen gardens in improving family health, reducing household expenditure, and ensuring food and nutritional security.

The training witnessed enthusiastic participation from 25 farmers, farm women, rural youth, and homemakers from different parts of Goa. The participants expressed their willingness to establish and maintain kitchen gardens for sustainable household nutritional security and improved livelihoods.
