ICAR–KVK Phek Empowers Prison Inmates through Skill Development under ‘Project Revive’ Phek, Nagaland

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek, under ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, and ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone VII, Umiam, collaborated with the Government of Nagaland under Project Revive, a visionary initiative implemented in association with the Phek District Jail Authority. The programme aimed to promote the rehabilitation and social reintegration of prison inmates through skill development and sustainable livelihood interventions.

During the programme, participants were sensitized to the significance of agriculture-based skill development in creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. They were also apprised of the various extension activities and capacity-building programmes undertaken by ICAR–KVK Phek for empowering rural communities, while highlighting the transformative role of agriculture in enabling inmates to become self-reliant following their release.

A practical hands-on training on vermicomposting was organized as part of the programme. The inmates were trained in scientific methods of converting biodegradable organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost using simple and cost-effective techniques. The training also covered the importance of organic waste recycling, soil health improvement, and the potential of vermicompost production as a sustainable income-generating enterprise.

The initiative equipped prison inmates with practical agricultural skills to promote self-employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihood opportunities after their release. Through its participation in Project Revive, ICAR–KVK Phek reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive rural development by leveraging agricultural innovation and skill development as effective tools for rehabilitation and social empowerment.
