Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland Visits ICAR–NRC on Mithun and ICAR–NEH Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, Nagaland

Shri Nand Kishore Yadav, Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland, paid an official visit to the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, and the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, Nagaland Centre, today. The visit highlighted the significant role of ICAR institutions in advancing livestock development, agricultural research, technology dissemination, and farmer welfare in the North Eastern Region.

The Hon’ble Governor was received by Dr Girish Patil, Director, ICAR–NRC on Mithun, along with other scientists and officials.

During his visit to the Mithun Farm, the Hon’ble Governor was apprised of the Centre’s mandate, ongoing research programmes, breeding and conservation initiatives, and technological interventions aimed at the sustainable development of Mithun farming. Scientists highlighted the importance of Mithun as a unique and culturally significant livestock species of the North Eastern Hill Region and briefed him on efforts towards genetic improvement, scientific management, value addition, and livelihood enhancement.

The Governor also visited the Mithun Museum, where he viewed exhibits depicting the historical, socio-cultural, and economic significance of Mithun and appreciated the Centre’s efforts in preserving and documenting the rich heritage associated with this iconic bovine species.

Subsequently, the Hon’ble Governor visited the ICAR–NEH Nagaland Centre Research Farm and reviewed various livestock and agricultural units, including dairy, poultry, rabbitry, goatery, piggery, and experimental crop fields. He interacted with scientists, staff, and beneficiaries and witnessed demonstrations of innovative agricultural technologies developed for the region. Agricultural inputs were also distributed to selected beneficiaries during the programme.

A formal programme was held at the Conference Hall of ICAR–NRC on Mithun, where presentations highlighting the achievements, ongoing research activities, extension programmes, and future roadmap of both ICAR institutions were delivered. Dr. Girish Patil presented the major accomplishments and strategic vision of ICAR–NRC on Mithun, while Dr. Homeshwar Kalita outlined the regional research and extension initiatives undertaken by the ICAR–NEH Nagaland Centre.

Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Governor commended the contributions of ICAR institutions towards sustainable agriculture, livestock development, and rural livelihood enhancement in the North Eastern Region. He appreciated the pioneering work carried out by ICAR–NRC on Mithun in the areas of conservation, genetic improvement, value addition, and scientific management of Mithun. He also assured his support for facilitating policy interventions required for the growth and promotion of the Mithun sector in Nagaland.

The programme was attended by distinguished guests, including Shri Firhesie Nyuwi, Joint Secretary to the Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland; Squadron Leader Diptanshu Gupta, ADC to the Hon’ble Governor; Shri James Swu, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema Sub-Division; scientists, officials, students, farmers, beneficiaries, and invited dignitaries.

The visit provided an important platform to showcase the achievements and future potential of ICAR institutions in strengthening agricultural and livestock-based livelihoods while promoting sustainable development in Nagaland and the North Eastern Region.
