As part of the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, Umiam, organized an awareness meeting with village headmen of Meghalaya to promote the balanced use of fertilizers and sustainable agricultural practices in state.
Dr G. Kadirvel, Director, of the institute has highlighted the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, which aims to create awareness on the balanced use of fertilizers, improve soil health, and promote sustainable agriculture. He further emphasized that there is crucial role of village headmen in disseminating the knowledge gained during the programme among the farmers of their respective villages. The participants were introduced about bio-agents, methods of producing them, and the benefits of green manuring, which can maintain crop productivity while improving soil health. He urged the headmen to actively encourage farmers to adopt balanced fertilizer application, natural farming and urban farming practices for long-term agricultural sustainability.

The participants were also educated about social media platform of the Institute and the farmer-friendly technologies developed by ICAR that enhance crop productivity while preserving soil health which would contribute significantly to food security, improved nutrition and sustainable livelihoods. The participants were also taken to the demonstration farm of Natural Farming and Integrated Organic Farming System to gain firsthand information.
The programme witnessed the participation of 92 village headmen from the various district of Meghalaya viz. East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi districts.
